Splendid animal statues and striking big-cat mosaics welcome visitors to world-famous Antwerp Zoo. Although it's one of the world’s oldest zoos (founded in 1843), enclosures in the 10-hectare site are state-of-the-art and the zoo’s breeding program has an international reputation.
A fascinating reef environment has recently been added to the aquarium area, as part of a major overhaul. Popular new animal additions include a koala couple, Goonawarra and Guwara, who share a restored 1898 thatched-roof building with their antipodean friend Lily, a tree kangaroo.
