Despite its pleasant setting, surrounded by bucolic hiking trails, the monastic complex that produces Westmalle's famous Trappist beers looks more like a prison than an abbey – except that the walls are built to keep visitors out. At the abbey's own tavern, sample the two classic brews or have them mixed as a 'half-and-half' (€3.70). The complex is 2km southwest of Westmalle town beside the N12. Antwerp–Turnhout bus 410 stops outside twice hourly (at the Abdij stop).
