The 18th-century Dossin Barracks were used by the Nazis as a WWII deportation centre, and 25,500 Jews and 352 Roma were sent to Auschwitz concentration camp from here in 28 convoys. Only 1400 returned. The complex has been preserved as a memorial and, across the road, there is a new, movingly austere museum building designed by celebrated Belgian architect bOb Van Reeth.
