Parc de Laeken
The Parc de Laeken starts opposite the Domaine Royal and stretches to the Atomium. Dotted with chestnut and magnolia trees, its focal point is Léopold Is statue, erected in 1880.

Dukes of Brabant Mansion
Six 1698 houses sit behind this single palatial facade, reworked in 1882. Had the imperial governor had his way after 1695, the whole square would have looked rather like this.

Musée dHistoire de la Brasserie Diekirch & Conservatoire National de Véhicules Historiques
Centrally located, the one-room Brewery Museum celebrates Diekirch Beer, the Grand Duchy’s best-known lager. The ticket price also allows you to peruse a modest car collection.

Tchantchès Pilot Sculpture
Liège’s mascot and oldest ‘citizen’ is a big-nosed wooden puppet called Tchantchès.On Place St-Lambert is this cartoonesque statue of Tchantchès piloting a little metal aeroplane.

The central, barnlike 1258 Begijnhofkerk is renowned for a gruesome medieval fresco depicting St Agatha’s martyrdom.

Across the River Meuse from the city centre is the island of Outremeuse, whose working-class residents consider it a ‘Free Republic’, a freedom that is chaotically celebrated on 15 August.

Statue of Godefroid (Godefroy) de Bouillon
The bold equestrian statue at the centre of Place Royale depicts Godefroid (Godefroy) de Bouillon, the crusader knight who very briefly became the first European ‘king’ of Jerusalem in 1099.

Rouge Cloître
The Rouge Cloître, an arts centre occupying a 14th-century abbey in the Forêt de Soignes (about a 40-minute drive from Brussels), offers a playground suitable for kids up to about 12.

Gotische Zaal
The gothic halls polychromatic ceiling almost drips with medieval carvings, and murals depicting the towns history add to the rooms magnificence. Pick up an audio-guide before setting off.

Palais des Congrès
The elegant stone-and-brick Palais des Congrès conference centre was rebuilt in the 1930s with war reparations from Germany (the German army having torched the whole square in 1914).

Bruegel House
There is a museum in this step-gabled house where Pieter Bruegel the Elder lived and died, but it’s only open by reservation; phone ahead or check with the tourist office for details.

Château de Sombreffe
The village of Sombreffe is less appealing than Corroy, but its castle has a particularly fine quiver of variously shaped towers. If the gates open, you can wander in to have a peek at the courtyard.

In the centre of Vresse, this attractive gallery boosts its permanent collection (audio guide included) of painting and sculpture by artists with a connection to the town with a free annual exhibition.

De Permanensje
The tourist office within the town hall has a range of museum-like video introductions to the town’s trades and traditions, push-and-sniff buttons to press and a selection of costumes for the Manneken.
