Down by the gently attractive riverbank in the very heart of Banja Luka you'll find the chunky walls of a large, squat 16th-century fortress.
The almost-flat layout means that the complex lacks the drama of many other smaller Bosnian castles and the walls enclose mainly unattractive parkland marred with a car park. Five gate towers roofed with shingles are looking worse for wear but an EU-funded restoration has started and atmospheric restaurant Kazamat is built attractively into the riverside ramparts. Archaeological finds suggest that the site has been occupied right back to Stone Age times.
