Zrinjevac Park

The northeastern and oldest link in the network of parks around Zagreb’s Donji Grad (Lower Town), which forms the city’s cultural district, Zrinjevac Park is an area of landscaped gardens forming a quiet respite from the city noise. With walkways shaded by rare plane trees, bright plantings of flowers and lawns dotted with fountains, it is one of the most popular spots for locals and lovers to while away an hour or two on summer afternoons. 
The park was laid out in June 1873 in honor of 16th-century Croatian military hero Nikola Šubic Zrinski on the site of a former cattle market. Various statues and the meteorological column that ornament the park were added over the years by wealthy local donors, and it is still lit by the gaslights introduced in the late 1870s. Concerts take place at the wrought-iron bandstand in the middle of the park and every year a Christmas Market is held here throughout Advent. Monumental 19th-century civic buildings, including law courts and government ministries, surround Zrinjevac, as does the Zagreb Archaeological Museum (Arheološki muzej u Zagrebu), which holds a world-class collection of prehistoric exhibits.
