Heritage Museum
This museum in a baroque palace contains a collection of contemporary art and old masters from Rovinj and elsewhere in Croatia, plus archaeological finds, a maritime section and occasional special exhibits.

St John the Evangelists Church
Its thought that parts of this atmospherically ruined Romanesque basilica date as far back as the 5th century. Today, only a handful of columns are still standing, along with the restored 12th-century bell tower.

Museum of Religious Art
This impressive museum in the Benedictine convent boasts a fine collection of reliquaries, sculpture, embroidery and paintings. Of particular note are works by Venetian masters Paolo Veneziano and Vittore Carpaccio.

Garden of Fine Scents
This fragrant paradise on the southern edge of town has over 250 native plant varieties plus 100 exotic species, all framed with gromače (traditional stone fences). Natural fragrances, salts and liquors are sold too.

Galerija Branislav Dešković
This gallery, inside a Renaissance-baroque townhouse right on the seafront, displays work by 20th-century Croatian artists, amounting to around 300 paintings and sculptures. A great place to pop in on a cloudy day.

Revelin Archaeological Exhibition
Fragments of masonry and sculpture are presented in this small museum under the Revelin Fort. There are some good examples of medieval plait-work (pleter) – psychedelic squiggles somewhat similar to those associated with Celtic art.

Venetian Towers
The town has three 15th-century towers that date from the Venetian rule and once formed the city walls: the gothic Pentagonal Tower at the beginning of Decumanus; the Round Tower on Narodni trg; and the Northern Tower on Peškera Bay.

Salt Pans
The salt pans in Ston brought so much wealth and are still operational today. Salt is gathered between late July and September and volunteers are needed to help out – it’s a kind of working holiday; check the website for info.

Croatian Natural History Museum
This museum houses a collection of prehistoric tools and bones excavated from the Krapina cave, as well as exhibits showing the evolution of animal and plant life in Croatia. Temporary exhibits often focus on specific regions.

Boćarski Dom
For a little open-air activity, this is the best place for tots to work off steam. The park has the best in playground equipment, playing fields and a rollerblading ramp. Theres also a relaxing path along the Sava River for parents to enjoy.

Račić Family Mausoleum
Built in 1921, this beautiful white stone tomb is the handiwork of pre-eminent Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Its located in the town cemetery, in the wooded area near the tip of the peninsula; take the path leading up from the monastery.

Land Gate
The most elaborate of the city gates also has the prettiest setting, facing a sheltered little marina. Dating from 1543, its Renaissance-style decorations include St Chrysogonus (Zadars patron saint) on horseback and the Venetian winged lion.

Church of the Annunciation
The old towns sole Serbian Orthodox church provides an interesting contrast to the numerous Catholic churches scattered about. Dating from 1877, it suffered substantial damage during the most recent war and was only fully restored in 2009.

Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art
Spread over three floors of a significant modernist building east of the old town, this excellent gallery showcases Croatian artists, particularly painter Vlaho Bukovac from nearby Cavtat. Head up to the sculpture terrace for excellent views.

Church of the Nativity
The parish church (built 1696–1775) towers over the town from the ridge. Inside are some notable artworks, including a painting of the Nativity by an 18th-century Venetian artist, and relics of St Romulus. Its usually only open around Mass times.

Triumphal Arch of Sergius
Along Carrarina are Roman walls, which mark the eastern boundary of old Pula. Follow these walls south and continue down Giardini to this majestic arch erected in 27 BC to commemorate three members of the Sergius family who achieved distinction in Pula.

Dražen Petrović Memorial Museum
Basketball is popular in Zagreb, which is home to the Cibona basketball team. Pay homage to the team’s most famous player at the Dražen Petrović Memorial Museum, next to the Technical Museum. Games take place frequently at the Cibona Tower nearby.

Walls
The major sight in Ston is the 14th-century walls that stretch from both Ston & Mali Ston far up the hill. Now fully restored, you can walk the ramparts for long stretches, and the clear Pelješac air allows for fine views over the peninsula.

Varaždin Cemetery
A 10-minute stroll west of Stari Grad takes you to this serene horticultural masterpiece, designed in 1905 by Viennese architect Hermann Helmer. Meander amid tombstones, avenues, promenades and over 7000 trees, including magnolia, beech and birch.

Viewpoint
For a great view over the rooftops including all four bell towers, head to the northwesternmost corner of the Old Town and look for a small courtyard containing fragments of old monuments. Stone stairs lead up from here onto the walls and a lookout.
