Balbi Arch
The elaborate Balbi Arch was built in 1679 on the location of the former town gate. The top of the arch is ornamented with a Turkish head on the outside and a Venetian head on the inside.

Bishop’s Treasury
Adjoining the Cathedral of St Stephen, the treasury houses silver vessels, embroidered Mass robes, numerous Madonnas, a couple of 13th-century icons and an elaborately carved sarcophagus.

Ramparts
Be sure to walk on the outer walls of the ramparts for memorable vistas over vineyards, fields and oak woods below. Take a break in the hidden cafe on the city walls, by the post office.

Loggia
This 1550 loggia served as the community centre of Labin in the 16th century. News and court verdicts were announced here, fairs were held and waywards were punished on the pillar of shame.

Galerija Miroslav Kraljević
Founded in 1986, this contemporary art space east of the city centre dedicates itself to visual art. It has a dynamic repertoire of exhibitions, lectures, presentations and residency programs.

Galerija Josip Generalić
Named after Josip, the son of the famous Ivan (himself also a renowned painter), this gallery is located in the Generalić family home in Hlebine. It’s best to call ahead to check that it’s open.

Convent of St Nicholas
The treasury of this Benedictine convent is home to a dazzling 3rd-century relief of Kairos, the Greek god of opportunity, carved out of orange marble. Access by appointment from October to May.

Salt Exhibition
Over the bridge in what remains of ancient Stari Grad – which is very little – this exhibition (in a former salt warehouse) documents the production of salt in Pag with photography and artefacts.

Botanical Garden
If you need a change from museums and galleries, take a break in this lovely, verdant retreat. Laid out in 1890, the garden has 10,000 species of plants and plenty of restful corners and paths.

Galerija Greta
This storefront gallery in an old textile shop hosts fun Monday night openings, showcasing different art forms: fine arts, video, sound installations, sculptures, projections and performances.

Lighthouse
The fishing village of Savudrija is Croatia’s westernmost point and home to Istria’s oldest lighthouse, built in 1818. The lighthouse is now available for weekly rental (5312KN per week for two people).

Our Lady of Lourdes Capuchin Church
If youre arriving by bus, you wont help but notice this imposing church towering over the station. Dating from 1904, its ornate neo-Gothic facade stands above an elaborate Italianate double staircase.

Gallery of Modern Art
Take in this glorious display of Croatian artists of the last 200 years, including such 19th- and 20th-century masters as Bukovac, Mihanović and Račić. It’s a fine overview of the nations vibrant arts scene.

Marco Polo Museum
One for the kiddies, this somewhat tacky museum tells the story of Polos extraordinary life by way of seven life-sized waxwork tableaux illustrating key scenes. Some of the commentary is a little dubious.

Maritime Museum
Inside the vaulted chambers of St John Fort, this well-presented museum traces the history of navigation in Dubrovnik with ship models, maritime objects and paintings.

St Andrews Monastery
Founded in 1018, this Benedictine monastery has Rab’s oldest bell tower (1181). Peer through the railings at the churchs triple nave; some of the plasterwork has been uncovered to reveal the original stonework.

Osor Archaeological Collection
On the main square in the 15th-century town hall, this outpost of the Lošinj Museum contains a collection of stone fragments, reliefs, ceramics and sculptures from the Roman, early Christian and Medieval periods.

Historical & Maritime Museum of Istria
Housed in a 17th-century Venetian hilltop fortress in the old town’s centre, the meagre exhibits here deal mostly with the maritime history of Pula, but the views from the citadel walls are worth a stop.

Fonticus Gallery
Fonticus Gallery promotes recent work of mainly Croatian artists. It doesn’t have a permanent collection but does host a small display of heraldic paraphernalia that includes helmets, insignia and escutcheon.

Museum of Contemporary Art of Istria
Pop in to Pulas contemporary art museum, inside the old printing house off the harbour, for a look at Istrias art from the second half of the 20th century up until today. Rotating exhibits change frequently.
