Asmalı Beach
Asmalı Beach is slap in front of the border village of Yeşilirmak (Limnitis). It’s a clean pebbled beach, with a few restaurants surrounding it, catering to those who travel this far.

Municipal Gardens
A pleasant park located right in the centre of the Old City with a large children’s playground, ponds and water features, plus plenty of mature shady trees and at least a couple of ice cream vendors…

Finikoudes
Clean, shallow beach that is highly popular despite not being particularly pretty. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired for between €2 and €3 and there are kiosks and cafes galore all along the strip.

Michael Owen Gallery
British artist Michael Owen has been living in Cyprus since 1971 and his work is alive with the spirit of the Cypriot landscape. His gallery in Laneia is well signposted from the village centre.

Lanitis Art Foundation
This arts centre runs a rolling schedule of events throughout the year, often highlighting interesting local artists and edgy exhibitions. Check the website for what’s on show when you’re in town.

Bediz Beach
Just past Salamis, this soft-sand beach offers all amenities, including sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and a restaurant-bar. If it’s hot and you plan to see the ruins, take a swim here afterwards.

Agios Filon Beach
With its soft sand and big, flat sea rocks, this is another fantastic beach, near the Oasis at Ayfilon hotel and restaurant. It’s also a turtle-hatching beach and a great place to watch the sunset.

Ravelin (Rivettina) Bastion
Also known as the ‘Akkule’ or ‘white tower’. It was here that the Ottomans first breached the fortifications, surrendered by the white-flag-waving Venetians. You can enter the warren of rooms within.

Vrysoudia Beach
East from Alykes Beach, you come to arguably the best municipal beach, Vrysoudia Beach, stretching some 400m and where you can rent sunbeds and parasols (€5 per day). There is also a popular beach bar here.

Kissonerga Bay
Around 8km north of Kato Pafos, Kissonerga Bay is a long, sandy undeveloped beach, where you can find banana plantations and solitude. There are almost no facilities, so bring a book, food and water, and relax.

Konnos Beach
Bordering Paralimni, 2km past Kermia Beach, this lovely long stretch of white sand is sheltered by the bay and hills behind it. All kinds of water sports are on offer here, perfect with the placid waves.

Yedidalga Beach
This pebbled public beach with stretches of imported sand has a wooden pier for diving and swimming, a small bar and restaurant, a changing room and toilet facilities. It is well signposted and easily found.

Lemesos Mini Zoo
This renovated, albeit modest, zoo has an aviary, ostriches and some cheeky cheetahs. The zoo is within Lemesos’ leafy Municipal Gardens, 1.5km from the central old district walking along seafront Christodoulou Hatzipavlou.

St George of the Latins Church
Sitting incongrously amid a traffic intersection, St George of the Latins is one of Famagusta’s oldest churches. The remaining walls with their distinctive lancet windows are a good example of early Gothic architecture.

Lapidary Museum
Housed in a lovely 15th-century building, exhibits here include a varied collection of sarcophagi, shields, steles and columns, and a Gothic window rescued from a Lusignan palace that once stood near Atatürk Meydanı.

Ayios Elias
Rebuilt in 1980, this church is situated on a rocky peak just off the Protaras–Pernera road. A long set of stairs leads to the top, where you can enjoy magnificent views of Protaras and the bay. Follow the signs to get here.

Chrysaliniotissa Crafts Centre
This small arts centre is worth dropping into for its display of Cypriot arts and crafts. Several workshops and a vegetarian restaurant surround a central courtyard in a building designed along the lines of a traditional inn.

Pantahou
Starting from Agia Napa’s fishing harbour this strip of sand swings east for 1km. There are loads of eating and snacking options and bundles of activities on offer. Be aware that it gets extremely crowded in July and August.

Lara Beach
If you’re not one of those beach-goers obsessed with golden sand, the greyish sand of Lara Beach will be perfectly fine. This is a good swimming spot which also has clean toilets and changing-room facilities as well as a small snack bar.

Childhood House of Makarios
A considerable sized building, considering his family’s peasant status, the childhood house of Makarios contains more photos and memorabilia from his younger years. If the house is locked, you can obtain the key from the nearby cultural centre.
