Kotnov castle, marking the oldest site in Tábor, was founded in the 12th century. It was destroyed by fire in 1532 and in the 17th century the ruins were transformed into a brewery. The remnant 15th-century Kotnov Tower can be climbed from the adjoining Bechyně Gate for a broad view of the city and the Lužnice River.
