The former textile mill on Brandts Passage has been beautifully converted into a sprawling art centre, with thought-provoking, well-curated changing displays (including a riveting exhibition on tattooing when we last stopped by). Note: there's free entry after 5pm Thursday.
Brandts Samling (the permanent collection) traces 250 years of Danish art, from classic to modern, and includes an impressive assemblage of international photography.
Art highlights include portraits by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (the 'father of Danish painting'), plus HA Brendekilde’s powerful Udslidt (‘Worn Out’; 1889), depicting a collapsed farm worker, and PS Krøyer's radiant Italienske markarbejdere ('Italian Field Laborers'; 1880). Funen artists also feature – Johannes Larsen's Svanerne letter, Fiil Sø is a stunning depiction of swans taking flight.
On the third floor, Danmarks Mediemuseum traces the history of the Danish media (primarily in Danish, but with a tablet provided for coverage in other languages).
The area around Brandts is worth a wander for great street art and murals.
