The words 'higgledy' and 'piggledy' could have been invented to describe Ærøskøbing. A prosperous merchants' town in the late 17th century, its winding cobblestone streets meander between crooked houses, cheerfully painted and gently skewed, with hand-blown glass windows, doorways bursting with bright hollyhocks, and half-timbered courtyards.
The town's former poorhouse is now Flaske Peters Samling , a small museum displaying the amazing life’s work of Peter Jacobsen (‘Bottle Peter’), who crafted 1700 ships-in-a-bottle. A mere 95m to the north, Æro Museum offers a sweet assemblage of maritime paraphernalia, traditional clothing, furniture and household utensils.
