A thought-provoking place, the Welfare Museum is housed in Svendborg's old poorhouse, which was home to paupers during its century of operation (from 1872). There were two ways to be admitted to this institution – the 'worthy' poor (disabled or old, for example), or the 'unworthy poor' (capable of work but unemployed, alcoholics, vagrants, 'women of easy virtue').
It's hard to reconcile such an equitable society (today's Denmark) with such harsh judgements, and this museum does a good job in explaining the times. There's also a moving section on life in children's homes and orphanages.
