Pier Head

The departure point for ferries crossing the River Mersey, Pier Head has been a Liverpool landmark, seafaring icon and transport hub for centuries. In the 19th century, scores of Irish and British emigrants sailed from here to begin a new life in the New World.

Fronting the river at Pier Head are three particularly grand buildings, known as the Three Graces. The most famous is the Royal Liver Building, topped by twin statues of the legendary liver bird. Next to the Liver Building are the Italianate Cunard Building and the domed Grade II-listed Port of Liverpool Building.

The Mersey Tunnel takes cars under the river at Pier Head, and above ground there are river promenades with views and several memorials to visit.

The Titanic Memorial commemorates the doomed engineers who died while working aboard the ship, and there are memorials to the merchant navy and Canadians who died in World War II.

Pier head is on the Mersey River waterfront, just north of Albert Dock.
