U-Boat Story

Offering a rare chance to peek inside a real German U Boat and learn about life onboard a World War II submarine, Liverpool’s U-Boat Story is among the city’s most fascinating attractions and a popular stop on the hop-on hop-off Mersey River Explorer Cruises. The German submarine U-534 sunk in 1945 off the coast of Denmark and remained at the bottom of the ocean until 1993, when it was recovered and restored by the award-winning museum.
The gigantic submarine has been split into four sections, each with glass viewing partitions that allow visitors to view the impressive interiors and preserved artifacts, including a rare Enigma machine. Through interactive and audio-visual exhibits, visitors can piece together the mystery of the sinking of the U-534, which refused to surrender despite orders to do so, as well as discovering what life was like onboard and the fate of the 49 surviving crew members.

The U-Boat Story is located at the Woodside Ferry Terminal in Birkenhead and is open daily from 10:30am to 5pm (last entry at 4:30pm). Adult admission is £6.50.
