St George’s Distillery
The making of whisky is more often associated with Scotland than England, but there is one distillery south of the border – and an award-wining one at that – located in the rural flatlands of Norfolk. Winners of the European Whisky of the Year award for 2015, the owners of The English Whisky Company set about opening the first distillery in England for over 100 years and produced their first barrels in 2006. St George’s Distillery was born and since then more than 3,000 barrels have been produced, using crystal-clear local water and the barley grown in fields all over Norfolk. The single malt whiskies are distilled by hand in traditional copper stills and stored in aged wooden casks before being bottled – again by hand – and ready for tasting and selling. Guided tours of the distillery include a tasting session of the St George’s whiskies and the chance to buy from the store; there’s a coffee shop onsite too.
For a real taste of the English countryside, a tour of the distillery can be combined with a visit to a local Norfolk pub for a hearty English roast dinner.
