Bolton Castle

Perched on the windswept moors of Wensleydale, the imposing square keep of Bolton Castle is among the most distinctive landmarks of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and renowned as one of England’s best-preserved medieval castles. Built in the late 14th century by the aristocratic Scrope family, whose descendants still own the property today, Bolton Castle boasts an illustrious history, taken under siege during the Civil War and once home to an imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots.
Today, the castle is frequently used for special events, weddings and film locations, alongside being a popular tourist attraction and home to the elegant Bolton Castle Tea Room. As well as viewing the Old Kitchens, Dungeon, Nursery and Armory, visitors can take a peek into Mary, Queen of Scots’ former bedroom, learn about the castle’s history and explore the castle gardens, where it’s possible to see falconry and medieval archery displays, visit a working bee hive and watch the feeding of the wild boar.

Bolton Castle is located in Wensleydale, on the eastern border of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Adult admission to the castle and gardens is £8.50.
