Liverpool Cathedral

Liverpool’s Anglican cathedral is a massive construction with a neo-Gothic central bell tower, soaring stained-glass windows and filigree internal details.

The building looms over Liverpool, and no wonder – it’s the largest cathedral in the world. Even the building’s bell and pipe organ are record breakers.

Designed by neo-Gothic architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, at the tender age of 21, the sandstone building’s foundation stone was laid in 1904 and the cathedral was consecrated in 1924.

The bell tower is one of the tallest in the world, providing views across the Mersey and along the coast. Unfortunately, Scott didn’t live to see the tower’s completion, as construction wasn’t completed until 1961.

After perusing artworks by such diverse artists as Tracey Emin and Della Robbia, admire the cathedral’s soaring internal spaces, take the Tower Experience for city views, tour the embroidery exhibition, and visit the Lady Chapel to see its ornate reredos screen.

Liverpool Cathedral is a little south of the city center on the edge of Chinatown, an uphill walk from Albert Dock.
