Middleham Castle

The once-mighty Middleham Castle might now lie in ruins, but it’s none-the-less impressive and as you walk around the roofless remains, it’s easy to imagine the imposing fortress in all of its former glory. Dating back to the early 12th century, the castle was home to the noble Neville family, as well as being the childhood home of King Richard III and the King’s preferred residence up until his death in 1485. Today, a permanent exhibition at the castle is devoted to King Richard III and the castle’s other notable former residents, and visitors can also enjoy the views from the observation platform, explore the former stables and mill, and see the ruins of the ‘Princes Tower’, where Prince Edward was alleged to have been born and died.

Middleham Castle is located in Middleham, close to the eastern boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is open daily from March-September, between 10am-6pm, and October- February, from Saturday- Wednesday between 10am-4pm. Adult admission at the time of writing is £4.70.
