St Peter’s Church
At first glance, the weatherworn brick façade of St Peter’s Church offers little to get excited about, but this unassuming building is actually one of Liverpool’s largest parish churches and its 145-meter-tall bell tower stands at the city’s highest point. More importantly for the legions of Beatles fans who visit Liverpool every year, the 19th-century church was where two of the band’s most iconic members first met.
In July 1957, John Lennon was playing with his band the Quarrymen at a garden fete in the grounds of the church, and it was here that he first met Paul McCartney, forming the friendship that would be the lynchpin of the world’s greatest pop band. The Beatles connections don’t end there – head out to the graveyard at the back of the church and you might also recognize one of the names printed on the tombstones – Eleanor Rigby. Paul has since stated that he subconsciously remembered the name, later using it for The Beatles’ 1966 hit single of the same name.
