Lakeuden Risti Church
Alvar Aalto’s crowning achievement, Lakeuden Risti Church, is recognisable by its oddly secular steeple-clock tower. You’ll get a great perspective of the buildings making up the Aalto Centre by taking the lift (elevator) to the top.

Monument of Liberty
Where Bulevardi meets the beach is the Monument of Liberty, commemorating the landing of liberating German forces in 1918. The monument was taken down after WWII, but re-erected in 1960 with new text simply stating ‘For our liberty’.

Design Museum
The Design Museum has a permanent collection that looks at the roots of Finnish design in the nation’s traditions and nature. Changing exhibitions focus on contemporary design – everything from clothing to household furniture.

Sagalund
Near Kimito village, Sagalund is an open-air museum with more than 20 old buildings including a traditional sauna and blacksmith. There are 90-minute guided tours (included in admission and available in English) hourly from 11am to 3pm.

Kolttien Perinnetalo
Kolttien Perinnetalo is a delightful little museum with photos, crafts and memorabilia of the poignant Skolt history. The Skolt traditionally used a system of four seasonal camps, and other nearby buildings show some of this way of life.

Kuopion Taidemuseo
This features mostly modern art in temporary exhibitions, but also displays permanent works. Look out for paintings by local Juho Rissanen (1873–1950), whose realistic portraits of working Finns contrasted with the prevalent Romanticism.

Sjöfartsmuseum
Sjöfartsmuseum was originally built in 1837 as a merchant’s home to dominate the market square. Today it showcases Kristinestad’s maritime heritage, especially ship-building, with reconstructions of a captain’s cabin and a ship’s helm.

Workers Club Building
This is one of many buildings in Jyväskylä designed by the citys famous son, Alvar Aalto. Designed in 1925, this is an early work with Renaissance-inspired features such as columns and a Palladian balcony; the downstairs is now a karaoke pub.

Kuntsi
The beautiful former customs house now hosts changing exhibitions of pop art, kinetic art, surrealism and postmodernism. At its core is the collection of Simo Kuntsi, who gathered almost a thousand modern Finnish works from the 1950s onwards.

Särkänniemi Aquarium
The aquarium inside the Särkänniemi amusement park has limited information in English and isn’t especially memorable, with the Finnish fish (including some rare sturgeon relatives) more interesting than the colourful hobby-tank favourites.

Mineraalikokoelma
Dazzling exhibits at the Mineral Collection include fragile crystals and meteorite fragments. In the same building, the Luontomuseo s natural history collection includes stuffed mammals and birds, as well as traps and other hunting devices.

Imatran Taidemuseo
Attached to the public library, this bright white space has temporary exhibitions and a strong collection of Finnish modernism, including works by Wäinö Aaltonen and a Gallen-Kallela watercolour of the rapids during their heyday in 1893.

Pyhän Elian Kirkko
This beautiful wooden Orthodox church has a striking Russian influence. Follow the kalmisto (graveyard) sign to the waterfront Kokonniemi Cemetery , where trees shade the graves of those lost in the many conflicts the town has endured.

Ainola & Huupisaaret
Just north of the city centre and connected by small bridges, this great park has bike paths, museums, greenhouses and a summer cafe, as well as a fishway built so that salmon can bypass the hydroelectric dam to get to the spawning grounds.

St Nicholas Orthodox Church
Towering above Isopuisto Park, St Nicholas Orthodox Church was completed in 1801 and is Kotka’s only building to survive the Crimean War. Its believed to be the work of architect Yakov Perrini, who designed the St Petersburg Admiralty.

Viinitorni
If you want to sample a little more than a swig, the former local water tower has become Viinitorni with wines sold here by the glass. The tower has a panoramic viewing deck, which is a great place to sit on a summer afternoon or evening.

Merimiehen Kotimuseo
This house-museum on Pikisaari belonged to a local sailor. Built in 1737, it is the oldest house in Oulu and was transferred here from the city centre in 1983. The wallpaper and extendable bed are typical of 19th-century Finnish homes.

Front Museum
Original trenches, bunkers and artillery guns remain at the site of some of the worst Winter War fighting, 19km northeast of Hanko. Also here is a poignant indoor museum – the knowledgeable guide can answer any questions (including in English).

Halosenniemi
One of the most significant museums along this road; the sizeable Karelian-inspired log-built studio and home of Pekka Halonen has changing exhibition of works by him and his contemporaries. Its a lovely place with great views and a lakeside garden.

St Olafs Church
About 9km east of Uusikaupunki in the village of Kalanti, St Olafs Church dates from the late 14th century and has sumptuous interior paintings, one of which records the historic occasion of Bishop Henry meeting a devilish pagan on the Finnish coast.
