Orthodox Church
This is Finland’s oldest church. It was completed in 1785 by Russian soldiers and features a glittering iconostasis and other saintly portraits.

Naantali Museum
Housed in three Old Town wooden buildings dating from the 18th century, Naantalis museum casts a light on disappearing trades such as needlemaking and goldsmithing, and looks at how the town prospered from sock knitting.

Lemmenjoki Nature Centre
A small nature centre with displays on the river, maps, walking information, fishing permits and a powerful set of binoculars trained on a nearby fell. The entrance to Lemmenjoki National Park itself is 1.5km away.

Savenvalajan Verstas
Located outside of the Old Town, due to the fire risk, Savenvalajan Verstas is a small museum that once made distinctive stove tiles. It provides an insight into this fascinating trade, and you can have a go yourself.

Civil Guard & Lotta Svärd Museum
This Alvar Aalto–designed museum houses a collection based around the Lotta Svärd women’s voluntary (and unarmed) defence force, which took on military service during WWII and became one of the world’s largest auxiliaries.

Pyynikin Näkötorni
This stone observation tower is on the ridge, and has a cafe at the bottom serving Tampere’s best doughnuts. You can easily walk to the tower, or take westbound bus 15 to its terminus and walk back from there along the ridge.

Kellokas
At the foot of the fell’s western slopes, 2.5km from Äkäslompolo, this has a good downstairs exhibition on the local environment and way of life, as well as a cafe, maps, tourist information and advice on hiking in the park.

Sankta Catharina Kyrka
Sankta Catharina Kyrka in Kattby was built in the 13th century, though a fire in the beginning of the 15th century led it to be rebuilt with fresh wall paintings. To the west of the church are more than 30 Iron Age burial sites.

Luontokeskus Naava
By the roundabout in Pyhä, this modern nature centre has a good exhibition on the geology and ecosystem of the area, information on Pyhä-Luosto National Park, and activities such as hiking and fishing. Theres a decent cafe too.

Puustelli
On the western side of town (follow the path past the campsite and keep going), this noble old building displays many of the wooden sculptures from past years of the Kuvanveistoviikko festival. Follow signs for Taidekeskus.

Town Hall
Dominating the town centre, the art deco town hall was designed by Eliel Saarinen – the architect most famous for Helsinki’s train station – and completed in 1914. It now houses the local theatre and terrific Teatteri restaurant.

Oulu University Botanical Gardens
Oulu University Botanical Gardens , in Lineman, north of the centre, are pleasantly landscaped with thousands of exotic plants – including hardy 5m-tall cacti. A pair of greenhouses, named Romeo and Juliet, house tropical species.

Provincial Museum South Ostrobothnia
Five kilometres south of town in the leafy suburb of Törnävä, the Provincial Museum South Ostrobothnia is an open-air museum based around the mansion of the wealthy Wasastjerna family. Local bus 1 runs from Seinäjoki bus station.

Sankt Göran’s Kyrka
The copper-roofed Sankt Göran’s Kyrka, built in 1927, is one of the few modern churches on the islands. Its art nouveau style was conceived by Lars Sonck, who grew up in Åland. The glittering mosaic altarpiece is a real highlight.

Ruunaa Nature Centre
Ruunaa Nature Centre is near the bridge over the Naarajoki, where most boat trips start. There are exhibitions, maps, a library and a free English slideshow. It’s a good place to research rafting operators and hiking trails.

Kuhmo Church
The muscular mustard-yellow wooden Kuhmo Church was built in 1816 but had its dome added later. The interior is fairly unadorned but features a striking modern organ built in nearby Sotkamo. It’s a picturesque venue for concerts.

Öjskogparken
Just 100m southwest of Närpes Church, Öjskogparken is a collection of historic buildings, the marooned locomotive Kasköbässin, and an incredible outdoor revolving theatre , which hosts summer performances in the local dialect.

Lohja Museum
Lohja Museum re-creates a schoolhouse and a cowherd’s cottage with an impressive range of horse-drawn carriages, including an old-style hearse. The main building is the former vicarage, and has special exhibitions in summer.

Torni
A spectacular 360-degree panorama of Rauma radiates from this 70m-high water tower accessible by lift (elevator). At its summit is a new restaurant, Torni Kahvila , serving Finnish cuisine; tower admission is free if youre dining.

Lebellska Köpmansgården
Another affluent merchant built Lebell House, a block south of the market square. Dating from the mid-19th century, the museum gives an insight into upper-class life, including a baroque-styled salon with original linen wallpaper.
