Kirsti is a lovable collection of buildings with a yard that’s circled by a stable, granary and barn. Inside, rooms represent different periods of the home’s life right through to the 1970s.

Jyväskylän Taidemuseo
Opposite the church, this houses temporary exhibitions of modern art and sculpture, often arranged by the active local artists’ association. Don’t miss the astonishingly grand toilets.

Turku Biological Museum
In a beautiful 1907 building, the Turku Biological Museum features much of Finland’s fauna and flora represented in 13 realistic dioramas, including Laplands fjelds (barren, rocky plateaus).

Sankta Anne Kyrka
Sankta Anne Kyrka, with its unusual votive Turkish pirate ship, was built on top of a medieval Franciscan monastery – the monks’ chapel and ruined walls make for a pensive evening stroll.

Ortodoksinen Kirkko
Near the train station, the small, ornate, onion-domed orthodox church is also worth a visit. During the civil war, White troops besieged the church, which had been taken over by the Reds.

Myllysaari
On the lakeshore this sandy beach has an outdoor swimming pool, beach volleyball and the Myllysaari beach sauna . Hardy souls can swim here in winter when two pools are cut into the ice.

Oulunlinna
There’s not much left of Oulu Castle, although you can clearly see the remaining fortlike structure dominating the small park near the bridge. The observation tower, rebuilt in 1873, houses a cafe.

Kaapin Jouni
This historic farm on the other side of the river from Njurgulahti was once the home of the ‘reindeer king’ Jouni Aikio. You can visit it by organising boat trips from places to stay such as Ahkun Tupa.

Virtain Perinnekylä
Virtain Perinnekylä is a sprawling open-air museum with several buildings including loggers’ cabins and a windmill, handicraft shops, and an elegant cafe-restaurant with a lavish buffet lunch.

Gamla Stan Church
The Old Towns stone church has a tower that can be seen from anywhere in town. It was constructed between 1651 and 1680, destroyed in the fire of 1821, and rebuilt in 1841 in the new classical style.

Hiekan Taidemuseo
The collection of Kustaa Hiekka (1855–1937), a wealthy industrialist, is contained in this museum. There are paintings, furniture and fine old gold and silver items in the impressive building.

Wahlberg House
Ground-floor rooms in this delightful house built by a shipping magnate are furnished in wealthy 19th-century style, while the attic is given over to the story of Uusikaupunki’s maritime history.

Syöte National Park
This national park is a popular winter-sports escape from Oulu. It covers discrete areas of old-growth spruce forest and is great for ski-trekking or hiking. Theres also a downhill resort here.

Tuomarinkylä Museum & Children’s Museum
Not far from the airport, these museums occupy an 18th-century manor house perceiving the city through the eyes of a modern family. From central Helsinki take bus 64 to its terminus and walk 1km.

Sattmark
Situated 10km southwest of Pargas along the road to Nagu, Sattmark is a charming 18th-century red wooden sailor’s cottage with a cafe and rustic handicrafts, plus nature trails and ski tracks.

Kultaranta Grounds
The Kultaranta castle grounds can only be visited by guided tours, which leave from the front gate (at 2pm in English) or with a bus trip from Maariankatu, by Naantalis tourist office, at 1.40pm.

Pielisen Museo Indoor Museum
The separate indoor museum of Pielisen Museo features photographs and displays on Karelian folk history, which makes for an interesting look during the winter when the outdoor museum is closed.

Labbas Homestead & Bank Museum
In Storby, this museum shows off the typical archipelago house of sailor Johan Ekblom, with a section devoted to banking history. The museum is known for limited opening hours so call ahead to check.

Seffers Hembygdsgård
On the main road between Vargata and Lövö, Seffers Hembygdsgård is an 18th-century farmhouse that makes an easy if not essential break. It has a windmill, farm equipment and a Midsummer pole on display.
