Mustiala Manor
North of the village, impressive Mustiala Manor is a 16th-century estate which houses an agricultural school, a small museum devoted to farming tools, and a brewery and restaurant.

Sibelius Monument
This famous, striking sculpture was created by artist Eila Hiltunen in 1967 to honour Finland’s most famous composer. Bus 24 takes you there, but its a pleasant walk or cycle.

Lintula Convent
Finland’s only Orthodox convent, Lintula is very quiet. It’s serene and that is well worth the short detour, and it’s only open to visitors outside of summer by appointment.

Memorial to Elias Lönnrot
Opposite the Vanha Kirkko is this memorial to Elias Lönnrot, compiler of the Kalevala epic, depicting the author flanked by his most famous character, ‘steady old Väinämöinen’.

Ett Hem Museum
Designed by CL Engel, this gold-coloured turn-of-the-20th-century residence houses furniture of various styles, and works by painters Albert Edelfelt and Helene Schjerfbeck.

Pyhän Ristin Kirkko
This 15th-century Franciscan monastery church has early 16th-century frescoes and several beautiful painted panels, a Prussian triptych from the 15th century and an ornate pulpit.

Kajaanin Taidemuseo
Behind the old town hall is the former police station, which now serves as the Kajaanin Taidemuseo . It hosts changing exhibitions of mostly contemporary art from the region.

Hanko Museum
Hanko Museum is the town museum housed in the brick-and-stone building near East Harbour, with a smattering of local (especially military) history and changing exhibitions.

Kaupunginmuseo
A group of small museums scattered around the city centre constitute the Kaupunginmuseo , which all have free entry. All buildings focus on an aspect of the city’s past or present.

Ulrika Eleonora Kyrkan
Behind Kristinestads Old Customs House is the charming red-wood Ulrika Eleonora Kyrkan, with a crooked shingled steeple. Built in 1700, it retains much of its original detail.

Orrdals Klint
At 129m above sea level, Åland’s highest ‘mountain’ Orrdals Klint has two short, well-marked walking tracks (1km and 2.5km long) leading to the top, where there’s a viewing tower.

Museo Kangasniemi
Museo Kangasniemi is devoted to Kaarlo Kangasniemi, the 1968 Olympic Finnish weightlifting champion, and has a scale model of the ironworks. Free town maps are also available.

Sederholmin talo
The Helsinki City Museum is due to extend into nearby Sederholmin talo, Helsinki’s oldest central building (dating from 1757 and built by a wealthy merchant), which will reopen in 2016.

Myllymuseo
Myllymuseo is a highlight of Puu-Juuka as it’s a working old mill with a traditional smoke sauna nearby; there’s no signage so grab an English leaflet inside the museum when you pay.

Kaisaniemi Botanical Gardens
Closer to the centre, the Kaisaniemi Botanical Gardens is run by the university and comprises Finland’s largest botanical collection, with classic 19th-century greenhouses, a cafe and a park.

Wäino Aaltonen Museum
Naturalistic and cubist-tinged sculptures donated by artist Wäino Aaltonen himself are a highlight of this gallery, along with temporary exhibitions of contemporary and experimental art.

Kuddnäs
Finns know Nykarleby as the birthplace of Zacharias Topelius, author of much-loved children’s poetry. His home, Kuddnäs , is a beautiful old house but doesn’t really evoke the man himself.

Lelumuseo
On Suomenlinna, this is a delightful private collection of hundreds of dolls and almost as many teddy bears. The cafe here serves delicious home-baked cakes under a line of samovars.

Suomen Ortodoksinen Kirkkomuseo
This museum holds an excellent collection of items brought here from monasteries and churches now in Russian-occupied Karelia. It was being renovated at last visit, but reopens in 2015.

Run by the university, this central spot comprises Finland’s largest botanical collection, with classic 19th-century greenhouses (open shorter hours, adult/child €6/3), a cafe and a park.
