The memorial stands in the middle of shell-pocked Delville Wood, where the 1st South African Infantry Brigade fought against various units of the 4th German Army Corps in the third week of July 1916. Outnumbered, the South African troops were almost decimated but managed to hold on and fight back. The star-shaped museum is a replica of Cape Town's Castle of Good Hope. The memorial is in Longueval, about 13km east-northeast of Albert, mostly along the D20.
A wide avenue flanked by a double row of oak trees lead to the Great Arch, which precedes the rows of white headstones.
