Nicknamed ‘The Canary’ for obvious reasons, this mountain railway trundles up from Villefranche-de-Conflent (427m) to Latour de Carol (1231m) through spectacular Pyrenean scenery. It’s one of France’s most famous train trips, and attracts nearly half a million passengers in summer, and you can’t book, so it’s wise to arrive a good hour before departure.
