Plage Miramar
Biarritz’ raison d’être is its fashionable beaches. The central Plage Miramar is lined end to end with sunbathing bodies on hot summer days. Stripy 1920s-style beach tents can be hired for €9.50 per day.

Maison des Johnnies
Photographs at this popular museum trace Roscoffs roaming onion farmers, known as Johnnies, from the early 19th century. A visit is by guided tour only. Call ahead for tour times, as they change frequently.

Tour de Constance
Scaling the ramparts of the picturesque town of Aigues-Mortes rewards you with sweeping views. Head to the top of the tower, Tour de Constance, to reach them. The 1.6km wall-top walk takes about one hour.

Musée Départemental de Flandre
The main square, fringed by austere brick buildings with steep slate roofs, is where you’ll find this well-organised museum, which spotlights Flanders’ rich heritage and showcases Flemish art both old and new.

Marché Forville
For local folklore, head to Marché Forville, a couple of blocks back from the port. It is one of the most important markets in the region and the supplier of choice for restaurants (and for your picnic!).

James Joyces Flat
Peer down the passageway at 71 rue du Cardinal Lemoine: Irish writer James Joyce (1882–1941) lived in the courtyard flat at the back marked ‘E’ when he arrived in Paris in 1921; he finished editing Ulysses here.

Château de Roquebrune
The 10th-century chateau of Roquebrune crowns the 300m-high pudding-shaped lump on which medieval Roquebrune sits. The castle is an atmospheric place with simple but evocative props of life in medieval times.

Téléphérique du Sancy
From this cable cars upper station, its a short climb along a maintained trail and staircase to Puy de Sancys snowcapped summit, where fabulous views unfold over the northern puys and the Monts du Cantal.

Église Notre Dame du Marthuret
The 15th-century Église Notre Dame du Marthuret holds Riom’s treasured relics: a Vierge Noire (Black Madonna) and delicate Vierge à l’Oiseau, depicting the Virgin and Child accompanied by a fluttering bird.

Jardins Suspendus
An old hilltop fortress a bit over 1km north of the tourist office has been transformed into a beautiful set of gardens, whose greenhouses and outdoor spaces feature rare plants and cacti from five continents.

Stade Louis II
The stadium is home to the AS Monaco football team. Buy match tickets from the ticket office inside or view the stadium as part of a 20-minute guided tour; just turn up at the respective time and buy a ticket.

Villa Sauber
Part of Monacos Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, this sumptuous villa with lush garden hosts seasonal contemporary art exhibitions focusing on a performing-arts theme (Serge Diaghilev, stage designs etc).

Villa Paloma
This pearly-white villa, built for an American in 1913, is part of Monacos Nouveau Musée National de Monaco. Its hosts seasonal contemporary art exhibitions with an environmental theme (oceans, apocalypse etc).

Maison de la Faune
Budding entomologists should make a beeline for this spiralling stone tower opposite place de lHôtel de Ville, which houses over 10,000 insects, butterflies and stuffed beasties from the Auvergne to the Amazon.

Maison Lansyer
As you climb through the citadel you’ll pass Maison Lansyer, the former home of landscape painter Emmanuel Lansyer (1838–93), featuring his paintings alongside works by Canaletto, Millet, Piranese and Delacroix.

Musée Labenche
The town’s main museum is in the beautiful Renaissance Hôtel de Labenche . Exhibits explore local history and archaeology, and there’s a collection of accordions and unique 17th-century English tapestries.

Grotte de Glace
Ice statues representing creatures from prehistory glisten in this ice cave, carved into the Glacier des Deux Alpes and open in both winter and summer. To get there, take the Jandri Express lift to 3200m.

Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery
Many of the Canadians who died in the Dieppe Raid of 1942 are buried here. Situated 4km towards Rouen; from the centre, take av des Canadiens (the continuation of av Gambetta) south and follow the signs.

Église Ste Croix
The red-sandstone Église Ste Croix , has an altar which has 18 painted haut-relief panels of the Passion and the Resurrection. Out front, a Renaissancefountain holds aloft a statue of Emperor Constantine.
