The village’s main landmark is the 16th-century Château du Doyen , which houses a heritage centre and museum, L’Espace Patrimoine, showcasing the art and history of the region.

La Maison de Corsaire
This 18th-century mansion and historic monument was once owned by corsair (privateer) François Auguste Magon. Guided tours are in French but descriptions are available in English.

The largest US military cemetery in Europe is this WWI ground, where 14,246 soldiers lie buried, in Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, 41km northwest of Verdun along the D38 and D123.

Toulouses decorative arts museum takes in everything from suits of armour to rare clocks. Its named after a local art collector who restored the building and founded the museum.

The towns museum is atmospherically housed in the keep of Dinans ruined 14th-century château. It showcases the towns history and has information sheets in various languages.

Enclos aux Cigognes
About 20 storks live year-round in the Enclos aux Cigognes , and more hang out on top of it. It’s 250m behind the Renaissance hôtel de ville; on foot, cross the creek and turn left.

An engaging little museum chronicling the area’s rich heritage, with fossils and crafts, bull-fighting exhibits, Augustin Gonfond’s painstaking illuminations, and contemporary engravings.

Musée de lÉlectrification, de lEau et de la Lumière
Bourganeufs main claim to fame came in 1886, when it became one of the first places in France to be connected to mains electricity. In summer, this museum explores this electrifying event.

Palais de l’Europe
A futuristic glass crescent, the Council of Europe’s Palais de l’Europe across the the River Ill can be visited on free one-hour weekday tours; phone ahead for times and reservations.

Chapelle de la Sorbonne
The university’s distinctive domed church was built between 1635 and 1642. The remains of Cardinal Richelieu (1585–1642) lie in a tomb with an effigy of a cardinal’s hat suspended above.

Moulin de la Cortina
This 14th-century windmill is reached after a 20-minute walk through olive and almond groves. Climb to the terrace and admire the Mediterranean vistas of boats, coast and brilliant blue sea.

Ecomusée l’Olivier
If all the olive groves around Forcalquier have inspired curiosity, head 15km southeast to Volx to learn about olive oil production and the trees significance in Mediterranean culture.

Dunkirk British Memorial
The Dunkirk British Memorial , honouring over 4500 British and Commonwealth soldiers ‘with no known grave’, is next to a Commonwealth military cemetery 1.5km southeast of the tourist office.

Riverside Park
In summer, pedal and rowboats can be rented on quai des Régates. The promenade leads through a leafy riverside park, with statues, ponds, swans and a fountain. It’s the ideal picnic spot.

Pavillon Davioud
The Pavillon Davioud is an ornate pavilion in the Jardin du Luxembourg which hosts events such as the annual Fête du Miel (Honey Festival) and gardening courses with the École dHorticulture.

Musée de la Musique
The Musée de la Musique , inside the Cité de la Musique, displays some 900 rare musical instruments out of a collection of 4500; you can hear many of them being played on the audioguide.

Find out about the Biennale Internationale Design fair and browse exhibitions at the Cité du Design, in a gleaming glass-and-steel building; take tram T1 or T2 to the Cité du Design stop.

Château
Perched atop Rocamadour, the château is a series of 14th-century protective ramparts with excellent views of the valley. Exact change is required for the machine operating the entrance.
