The larger and flashier of Brühl's palaces, Schloss Augustusburg is a little jewel-box inside a moat. It was designed by François Cuvilliés. On guided tours you’ll learn fascinating titbits about hygiene, dating and other aspects of daily life at court. The architectural highlight is a ceremonial staircase by Balthasar Neumann, a dizzying symphony in stucco, sculpture and faux marble. At most times, visits are only by guided tour.
