On the right bank of the Rhine, 118m above the river, this mighty fortress proved indestructible to all but Napoleonic troops, who levelled it in 1801. A few years later the Prussians, to prove a point, rebuilt it as one of Europe’s mightiest fortifications. Today there are fabulous views from its ramparts and a regional museum and restaurants inside; an audioguide costs €2. It's accessible by car, on foot or by cable car.
