One of the largest of its type in Europe, this gypsum cave is on a grand scale. Hourly tours last about 50 minutes and take you past shimmering underground lakes and bizarre gypsum sheets that hang from the ceiling, as well as slabs described by legend as Barbarossa’s table and chair.
The caves are 7km west of Bad Frankenhausen, north of Rottleben.
