Built in the 17th century by an English merchant, the villa was British-owned (British statesman Gladstone addressed the locals from its balcony) until the Romas family bought it during the 1880s. Its fascinating period furnishings and decor are splendidly intact and the library holds an astonishing 10,000 volumes.
