The extensive remains of the Doric city of Kamiros stand above the coast, 34km southwest of Rhodes Town. Known for its figs, oil and wine, Kamiros was at its peak in the 7th century BC, but was swiftly superseded by Rhodes and devastated by earthquakes in 226 and 142 BC. Visible ruins include a Doric temple, with one column still standing, a temple to Athena and a 3rd-century great stoa. Come in the afternoon, when fewer visitors are around.
