The best-preserved section of Hania's massive outer fortifications is the western wall, running from the Firkas Fortress (once the old Turkish prison), at the western tip of the harbour, to the Siavo Bastion. It was part of a defensive system begun in 1538 by engineer Michele Sanmichele, who also designed Iraklio’s defences. From the top of the bastion you can enjoy fine views of the old town and open sea.
