This resting place of many famous Greeks and philhellenes is a peaceful spot to explore. Famous names include the archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann (1822–90), whose mausoleum is decorated with scenes from the Trojan War. Most of the tombstones and mausoleums are lavish in the extreme. Works of art include Halepas’ Sleeping Maiden sculpture, set on the tomb of a young girl.
