The beautiful small Byzantine Church of the Panayia, built on the ruins of an 8th-century basilica and opposite El Greco Museum, is in excellent condition. Inside are some evocatively faded frescoes. Unfortunately, at the time of research, there was no official ‘keeper of the keys’ though it’s worth asking at the village tavernas.
