Bakratsa Mansion Museum
Housed in a doctors 18th-century mansion, this museum displays medical instruments of the era and clothing for married and unmarried men and women. Its near the middle of the waterfront, 100m inland from Ploumisti Shop.

Rhodes Town Beach
The town beach begins north of Mandraki and continues around the islands northernmost point and down the west side of the New Town. The best spots will depend on the prevailing winds but tend to be on the east side.

Bath House of the Winds
This beautifully refurbished 17th-century hammam (Turkish bath) is the only surviving public bathhouse in Athens and one of the few remnants of Ottoman times. A helpful free audio tour takes you back to its glory days.

Moni Faneromenis
Founded in 1634, the monastery, on a hilltop 3km west of town, was destroyed by fire in 1886 and later rebuilt. Views of the lagoon and town are worth the ascent, as is the monastery’s museum of ecclesiastical art.

Megaro Gyzi Museum
Come to this quiet escape in the town’s north to take in fascinating photographs of Fira before and immediately after the 1956 earthquake, along with a collection of maps, engravings, paintings and 15th-century manuscripts.

Neo Frourio
A steep climb leads to this austere example of Venetian military architecture, added to extensively by the British. The interior is an eerie mass of tunnels, rooms and staircases, while the exterior has fine views.

Museum of Ancient Greek Music
This narrow room is filled with Christodoylos Halaris fascinating collection of over 80 instruments from as far back as 2800 BC. Its run by the collector, himself a prominent musician, and hours are somewhat irregular.

Popotech Workshop
A couple of kilometres south of Pouri is Popotech Workshop, where Irish and Dutch transplants Gemma and Gary create unique jewellery, ceramics and found-metal sculpture. Youll spot their quirky sculptures from the road.

Mineralogical Museum
Fabulous crystals and metals mined from the area are the highlights of Lavrios tiny Mineralogical Museum, which also traces the regions rich mining history. Its in the towns old steam-powered ore-washing facility.

Costas Tsoclis Museum
Kambos sits on the top of a scenic hill surrounded by fields and is home to the Costas Tsoclis Museum, home to works by the renowned contemporary artist. Tsoclis is an internationally recognised contemporary artist.

Ecclesiastical (Byzantine) Museum
Houses rare manuscripts, liturgical objects of silver and gold and striking icons dating from the 13th century. Samos owes some of this holy loot to its status as a bishopric (administering also Ikaria and Fourni).

Bayezit’s Mosque
The huge, now-derelict Bayezits Mosque was ordained by Murad, with construction begun by his son, Bayezit. It was the first of its kind in Europe. The mosques scale is impressive and restoration works are ongoing.

Taxiarhia of the Metropolis
South of Plateia Omonias, note the 13th-century fresco of the Madonna and Child above this churchs entrance. It contains the sacrosanct tomb of Pavlos Melas , leader of the 1904–08 ‘Macedonian Struggle’ against the Ottomans.

Museum of Popular Art
The quirky Museum of Popular Art, on the central square and just opposite the post office, contains a splendid confusion of old costumes, pots, textiles and photographs that could keep you going for hours. Opening times are erratic.

Kales Fortress
South along the waterfront is the medieval fortress, built in the early years of Venetian rule and strengthened by Francesco Morosini in 1626. Climb to the upper walls (watch your footing) for grand views to the eastern mountains.

Agioi Taxiarhes
On the central square is Agioi Taxiarhes, a church with beautiful 18th-century frescoes. Its extraordinary for the 48 internal ceramic jars that enhance acoustics, and for the unique frescoes, completed over 33 years by one monk.

Timios Stavros Church
If you’re tired of visiting Thrapsano’s pottery workshops, stop by the twin-aisled 15th-century Timios Stavros church in the middle of the village to check out its well-preserved frescoes. You might have to ask around for the key.

One of the original galleries to open in Psyrri’s warehouses, this impressive art space hosts a range of exhibitions of contemporary and international art, including installations, video art and photography by emerging Greek artists.

Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
It’s worth finding your way to this 7th-century Byzantine cathedral, a three-aisle basilica with superb frescoes dating to the 14th century. (Note: dont be confused with the church in the centre.) At 6.30pm you can hear the vespers.

Fira
Santorinis vibrant main town with its snaking narrow streets full of shops and restaurants perches on top of the caldera. The stunning caldera views from Fira and its neighbouring hamlet Firostefani are matched only by tiny Oia.
