This Psarades church (1893) is adorned with the double-headed eagle of Byzantium. An inscription refers to the village by its original Macedonian-language name, Nivitsi.

Venetian Fortress
The ruins of a Venetian fortress stand on an island linked to the tip of the headland by the worn remnants of an arched stone bridge. It’s a great spot for photos.

Archaeological Museum of Karpathos
Looking down over the town from a small seaside bluff, the Archaeological Museum of Karpathos houses local artefacts including coins, an early baptismal font and ceramics.

Apollo Theatre
Built in the 1860s, this venerable theatre was partly modelled on La Scala in Milan. Keep an eye out for regular theatre performances, or pop in to take a look around.

Ancient Cemetery
North along the waterfront is a fenced ancient cemetery dating from the end of the 8th century BC. It was excavated in 1983 to discover graves, burial pots and sarcophagi.

Kernos Stone
This disk with 24 holes around its edge is on the western side of the Palace of Malias Central Court. Archaeologists believe it probably had a religious purpose.

Grand Stairway
One of the most splendid of all the Minoan palaces, this 15m-wide Grand Stairway leads to the Propylon, a porch style entrance with a central column and pilasters.

Museum of History & Art
This museum is dedicated to the revolution and features a collection of Byron memorabilia and paintings. The passionate ticket seller has clocked up over 26 years in his chair.

Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa
Houses a superb private collection of Greek art from 1850 to 1950 (said to rival the National Art Gallery in Athens) in a stunning contemporary building, plus temporary exhibitions.

Don’t miss this excellent waterfront info centre all about the protected Mediterranean monk seal. It has great displays, videos in English and helpful multilingual staff on hand.

Afanis Naftis
The huge bronze sailor that stands in the square at the tip of the promontory celebrates Hora’s seagoing traditions. There’s small nautical museum nearby (infrequently open).

Tower of Sanoudos
Several Venetian mansions survive in the centre of Kastra, and you can see the remnants of his castle, the Tower of Sanoudos, which was once surrounded by marble balconies.

Propylaeum
From the Theatral Area, the 15m-wide grand stairway leads to the Propylon, which was a porch. Below the Propylon are the storerooms that still contain pithoi (storage urns).
