Loutro
The narrow, if pretty, Loutro beach is the launching pad for the scenic 6km-hike to Kronos via the Trakhoula Gorge. It’s about 5km east of Lendas.

After Sultan Süleyman had taken the city, it was Villiers de lsle who had the humiliating task of arranging the knights departure from the island.

Temple of Dionysos
The overgrown but evocative remains of this Greek temple, dating from the 2nd century BC, centre on an altar with a frieze depicting Amazon warriors.

Mavromichalis Tower
The Mavromichalis Tower, in a little square southwest of Plateia 17 Martiou, was once the mightiest tower in town, but now it stands sadly derelict.

Agios Georgios
Dating from the 12th century this ancient church was the sight of baptisms and now sits at a lower level to the street beside it and is easy to miss.

Boats from the old port (€5) go to Vidos Island, off the coast – great for beaches or a ramble through fortresses and a WWI Serbian cemetery .

National Marine Park of Zakynthos
Covering an area of 135 sq km, the National Marine Park in Zakynthos Laganas Bay was set up in 1999 to protect the endangered loggerhead turtle.

Shrine of Aphrodite
On the south side of the Castle of the Knights are the ruins of a Shrine of Aphrodite, the Temple of Hercules and a 5th-century Christian basilica.

Doltsos arhontika include the Emmanouil , Basara , Natzi , Skoutari , Papia and Papaterpou , mansions all named after their former resident families.

Mosque of Kioutsouk Hasan
On the eastern side of the inner Venetian harbour the prominent Mosque of Kioutsouk Hasan (also known as the Mosque of Janissaries) houses regular exhibitions.

Onassis Cultural Centre
The multimillion-euro visual and performing arts centre hosts big-name productions and installations. It’s 1.5km southwest of the Syngrou-Fix metro station.

Crypt
The palace was surrounded by an entire city whose excavation is still ongoing. The canopied structure just west of the compound is described as the Crypt.

Byzantine Fortress
Komotini’s 4th-century-AD Byzantine fortress was built by Emperor Theodosius, near todays Plateia Eirinis. Remnants include one of 16 original towers.

Bey Hammam
Stocky Bey Hammam was built in 1444, making it Thessaloniki’s oldest Turkish bathhouse. Currently these former Baths of Paradise only open on request.

Water Museum
The Water Museum exhibits various water-industry equipment, most of it laid out in an open-air setting a short walk from the waterfalls at Waterfalls Park.

Spinalonga Island Fortress
The Venetians built the formidable fortress in 1579 to protect the bays of Elounda and Mirabello. Spinalonga finally surrendered to Ottoman forces in 1715.

Moni Panagias Kounistras
From Troulos, a road heads 4km north to the serene 17th-century Moni Panagias Kounistras, worth a visit for the fine frescoes adorning its katholikon .
