Castle Hill Caves

TIME : 2016/2/18 20:12:41

Below Castle Hill is a 28km-long network of caves formed by thermal springs that contain a couple of attractions. The caves were used for military purposes during the Turkish occupation, as air-raid shelters during WWII, and as a secret military installation during the Cold War. Today they contain two attractions: the Buda Castle Labyrinth and the Hospital in the Rock .

The Buda Castle Labyrinth is a 1200m-long cave system 16m under the Castle District, looking at how the caves have been used since prehistoric times in five separate labyrinths encompassing 10 halls and galleries. It’s good fun and a relief from the heat on a hot summer’s day (it’s always 20°C down here), but it can get scary if you lose your way.

Far more instructive is the Hospital in the Rock, used extensively during WWII and again during the 1956 Uprising. It contains original medical equipment and 200 wax figures.
