Southeast of the Hungarian Orthodox Church stands the large Orthodox Synagogue , designed in 1861 by Ludwig Förster, architect of the Great Synagogue in Budapest. The Calvinist Plank Church is a 1938 replica of a 17th-century Transylvanian-style wooden church. It has been completely rebuilt and renovated after being badly damaged by fire in 1997. Below Avas Hill is the large Gothic Avas Calvinist Church (1410), with a painted wooden interior. The bell tower, which chimes musically on the hour, dates from the mid-16th century. From here you can stroll up leafy Avas Hill along narrow lanes and past some of the more than 800 wine cellars cut into the limestone. The best approach is via Mélyvölgy utca, off Papszer utca, or Földes Ferenc utca, off Mindszent tér.
