Surrounded by largely baroque buildings, Pécs' sprawling main square is the hub of the city – on summer days everyone gathers here to relax, unwind with a scoop of ice cream and people-watch. The square is anchored by the Trinity Column in the centre and, further down at the southern end, the porcelain Zsolnay Fountain boasts the lustrous eosin glaze and four bull’s heads; the fountain was donated to the city by the Zsolnay factory in 1892. The eosin creates an iridescent, metallic sheen that most people either love or hate.
The Janus Pannonius Archaeology Museum is also located here but was currently closed for renovations at the time of research; the expected opening date was late 2013 but check the website for details.
