Basilica Minor

TIME : 2016/2/18 20:13:38

Just north of the castle, the Basilica Minor is one of Hungary's largest Gothic hall churches (those within castle walls), and has flip-flopped from serving Catholics to Protestants and back many times since the 14th century. The enormous baroque altar was moved here from the Carmelite church in Buda Castle late in the 18th century; the 200-year-old organ from Kassa (now Košice in Slovakia) is still used for concerts throughout the year. The statue (1985) by Imre Varga outside the church depicts the Sárospatak-born and much revered St Elizabeth, a 13th-century queen of Hungary, riding side-saddle, and her husband Louis IV on foot. Her relics are within the church.
