Across the Rába River, the richly decorated octagonal cupola, galleries and tabernacle of the city’s erstwhile synagogue, built in 1870, poke above the treeline. The former Jewish house of worship now plays host to János Vasilescu's private collection of contemporary Hungarian art, but the true star here is the beautifully restored interior. In the former Jewish school next door is the city’s music academy.
