Mýrdalsjökull Glacier

Myrdalsjokull Glacier, the fourth largest glacier in Iceland, covers a vast area of more than 270 square miles (700 square kilometers) and is as thick as 2,460 feet (750 meters) in places. When the sky is clear, the glacier ranks among the most visually stunning in the world.
The entire ice cap sits atop Katla Volcano, one of the largest active volcanoes in the Northern Hemisphere. The volcano typically erupts every 40 to 60 years, with the last eruption occurring in 1918.
Travelers have their pick of a range of activities on the glacier, including ice climbing, dogsledding and tours by snowmobile, Super Jeep or snow scooters.

Practical Info

Visitors are discouraged from touring Myrdalsjokull Glacier on their own, as crevasses, unstable ice and rapidly changing weather conditions can make it dangerous for travelers inexperienced with such conditions.
