Solfar Sun Voyager

The Solfar, or the Sun Voyager, is a well-known sculpture in Reykjavik. It was created by Jon Gunnar Arnason who came up with the concept in the late 1980s. It was his entry into a competition for an outdoor sculpture to honor the 200th anniversary of the city of Reykjavik, and his sculpture won. The full scale version was unveiled in 1990, unfortunately after the artist's death. The sculpture is made of stainless steel and sits on a circle of granite slabs. 
A common misconception of the sculpture is that it represents a Viking ship. However, the original intent of the Sun Voyager was that of a dream boat honoring the sun and symbolizing light and hope. It sits by the city's waterfront and faces Mt Esja, making for a great photo opportunity, and it is a popular spot to visit at night during the summer to enjoy the midnight sun.

The Solfar Sun Voyager sculpture is located on Sæbraut along the Sculpture and Shore Walk southeast of the Reykjavik Concert Hall. It can be reached using several bus routes: 1, 3, 6, 11, 12, 13.
