At the far end of Queen's Rd is the most impressive monument to the days of the great liners – the vast Thompson Graving Dock where the Titanic was fitted out.
Beside it is the Thompson Pump House , which has an exhibition on Belfast shipbuilding. Guided tours (2pm Saturday and Sunday) include a viewing of original film footage from the shipyards, a visit to the inner workings of the pump house and a walk along the floor of the dry dock.
The graving dock's huge size gives you some idea of the scale of the ship, which could only just fit into it. In the dock on the far side of the pump house, naval-history buffs can see HMS Caroline , the UK's last surviving WWI Royal Navy cruiser. Built in 1914, the ship is being converted into a floating museum scheduled to open in 2016.
