A few kilometres south of Fluminimaggiore, this is the largest cave system of its sort so far discovered in the Iglesiente. The standard 50-minute tour passes through several lake chambers and the Archaeological Room , so-called because it's thought to have once housed a water temple. Finally you'll reach the Pozzo Rodriguez (Rodriguez Well), home to an impressive 8m column, formed by a stalagmite and stalactite fusing together.
More exciting cave tours are also possible, taking in dramatic chambers like the White Room and the opalescent waters of the Pensile Lake . A six- to -eight-hour tour leads to the cave's crowning glory, the Virgin Room , where you can admire wonderful aragonites and snow-white slopes of solidified calcium.
These excursions (from €40 to €80 per person) need to be organised in advance.
