Saved from development by local protests, the Zingaro was established as Sicily’s first nature reserve in 1981. Its wild coastline is a haven for the rare Bonelli’s eagle and 40 other bird species. Wild carob, bright yellow euphorbia and other Mediterranean flora dust the hillsides, while hidden coves such as Marinella Bay provide tranquil swimming spots. Pick up a free map of walking trails at the park’s main entrance, 2km north of Scopello, or download it from the reserve’s website.
The main 7km trail along the coast passes by the visitor centre and five museums documenting everything from local flora and fauna to traditional fishing methods.
