That Tiepolo’s 1737–39 ceiling frescoes star St Dominic is hardly surprising given that this baroque church – designed by Giorgio Massari and completed in 1735 – was built for the Dominicans. Overwhelming grief grips Mary in Tintoretto’s sombre 1565 Crucifixion , a painting subsequently restored by Giambattista Piazzetta. Altogether lighter is Sebastiano Ricci's 1730–33 Saints Peter and Thomas with Pope Pius V , complete with comical cherubs performing celestial tumbling routines.
